Is It Worth Changing Careers For The Same Amount Of Money?

Would you change careers even if it doesn’t boost your salary? If you are someone looking to improve your quality of life, have a more flexible lifestyle but unsure if both can be worth more than a bigger paycheck, read on for some insights.

Ruskin Bond once wrote, “Money talks, baby. And usually, it is saying goodbye.”

For someone toying with the idea of changing careers, this must be a thought they are often plagued with. What if I don’t make as much money as I am making right now? What if I am not offered the hike?

But does that mean you stay stuck in a career that doesn’t bring you any happiness but just financial stability?

Absolutely not!

There are a number of reasons why people choose to change their careers. However, the most common factors that pop up when accounting for a career change are:

Reasons Why People Change Careers

  • For better pay: It is found that people who stay in their jobs for over 10 years make considerably less than those who have switched jobs. Or even those fresh out of college.

  • To reduce stress: In today’s day and age, no one wants to be stressed out. Everyone wants to have jobs that are easy to tackle and don’t become an unnecessary burden to them.

  • Have a better work-life balance: The importance of mental health has skyrocketed. A lot of people are simply fed up with working around the clock and are just looking for a balanced life. New careers mostly provide that.

  • Thirst for a new challenge: A lot of people become disillusioned after working in the same field for 10, 20 years. By the time their 30, 40 birthdays roll around they begin craving for a new adventure. This is what motivates them to quit their jobs and try a whole new career.

  • Or simply because they no longer feel passionate about their current career: Which is fair because just because we have one life, doesn’t mean we’ve signed it away to pursue only one thing. It’s important to see what else one is passionate about. The idea would be to explore a career out of that.

What Are The Benefits Of A Career Change?

Well, most people who have successfully changed their careers have reported being:

  • Happier

  • More satisfied

  • More fulfilled

  • Less stressed

Is It Worth Switching Careers For The Same Amount Of Money?

It is difficult to argue about whether one should switch careers if they are offered the same amount of money.

However, there are a lot of strong reasons why you should definitely think about moving into a new role. Even if the salary stays the same.

Technology

We live in a world where answers are at our fingertips. We don’t need to wait to get home before going online. We have it right in our pockets. The last thing you want to do is become obsolete at your job. If your workplace doesn’t keep updating itself with changing times, maybe it’s time for you to bid them adieu.

Environment/Culture

Another important factor that leads to one changing careers at 30, 40 is the fact the current company’s environment/culture isn’t aligned to theirs. It is difficult to stay at a place which, while paying you good money, doesn’t share your core values. No one should be forced to pretend to be someone they are not.

Futureproof Yourself

Last but not the least, you have to think about your future. A lot of this depends on you and what you ultimately choose to do. But keep an eye out to see if there’s suddenly much less work than there used to be. You have to know when it’s the right time for you to jump shift and go on to your next adventure.
